In Summary

During the exercise, detectives discovered one large bundle of greenish plant material wrapped in a polythene bag, along with two smaller packages containing similar material.

Detectives from the Transnational Organized Crime Unit on Wednesday intercepted a passenger bus traveling from Busia to Nairobi at Limuru, arresting a 53-year-old woman and seizing suspected cannabis hidden in her luggage.

The operation is part of a broader crackdown by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations on organized crime and drug trafficking across the country.

Officers acted on credible intelligence that led them to stop a Crane Coach bus, registration number KDV 716C, before conducting a thorough search.

During the exercise, detectives discovered one large bundle of greenish plant material wrapped in a polythene bag, along with two smaller packages containing similar material. The substances are suspected to be cannabis, commonly referred to as bhang.

The suspect, identified as Ruth Wambui Muthiri, was arrested at the scene and taken to Muthaiga Police Station for processing.

The case has since been handed over to the Anti-Narcotics Unit at DCI Headquarters for further investigations and prosecution.

In a statement, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations emphasized its commitment to “detect, deter, and dismantle organized criminal enterprises.”

Officers said the arrest highlights the effectiveness of intelligence-led operations targeting suspected trafficking networks.

Authorities noted that the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway, a key route linking western Kenya to the capital, has seen increased monitoring to disrupt the movement of illicit substances.

While officials have not disclosed the quantity or street value of the seized cannabis, investigations are ongoing to determine the source and intended destination of the drugs.

Law enforcement officials also encouraged the public to assist in combating drug trafficking by reporting suspicious activity.

“We call upon members of the public to continue partnering with law enforcement by sharing actionable information,” the DCI statement said. Citizens can provide tips via the Fichua Kwa DCI toll-free number 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp on 0709 570 000.

The operation at Limuru reflects continued collaboration among specialized police units to dismantle narcotics supply chains, with officers maintaining heightened surveillance along major transport corridors.

Investigators are also examining whether additional individuals may be connected to the seized consignment, as the Anti-Narcotics Unit continues its inquiries.
